An honest comparison
Wix vs. a Custom-Built Website
Every local business owner hits this fork in the road: build it yourself on a platform like Wix or Squarespace, or hire someone to build it right. Here's what actually differs, no sales pitch.
Side by Side
Where the two paths actually differ
Not a list of reasons to be scared off Wix. Just what each path really costs you, in money, time, and flexibility.
Cost
DIY Builder
Low to start, but a subscription forever, usually $16 to $49/mo, more with add-ons for booking, SEO tools, or removing ads.
Custom build
A higher one-time build cost, then near-nothing to keep it running. No platform fee holding your site hostage.
Time investment
DIY Builder
You're the builder. Nights and weekends spent in a drag-and-drop editor, learning the platform's quirks as you go.
Custom build
Handed to you finished. Your time goes back into your business, not into figuring out a website tool.
Design flexibility
DIY Builder
Boxed into the template's blocks and layouts. Everyone on the same plan has the same underlying options.
Custom build
Built around your brand from scratch, not assembled from a template someone else is also using.
SEO / performance ceiling
DIY Builder
Builder-generated code carries extra weight your site doesn't need, which caps how fast and clean it can be.
Custom build
Clean, minimal code built for speed and structure, the technical foundation search rankings actually reward.
Ongoing maintenance
DIY Builder
Updates, plugin conflicts, and backups are on you. If something breaks at 9pm, it's your problem to fix.
Custom build
Maintained as part of the build, with care plans available after launch if you want it handled long-term.
Ownership
DIY Builder
Your content lives inside their platform. Leaving later means rebuilding elsewhere, not just exporting a folder.
Custom build
You own the code and the content outright. It's portable. It's actually yours.
When Wix Is Actually the Right Call
If you're testing a brand-new idea with no revenue yet, need a placeholder page up this week, or you're building something with no real conversion goal, a Wix or Squarespace site is a perfectly reasonable place to start. The math changes once your website needs to actually bring in customers, not just exist.
Questions People Ask
Wix questions, answered plainly
Is Wix bad for SEO?
Not bad, just limited. Wix sites can rank, and Wix has fixed a lot over the years. The ceiling is the code the editor writes for you. It carries extra weight you cannot remove, so the site is never as fast as a clean build. For a small local business that is fine at first. It matters once you are fighting five other shops for the same spot on Google.
How much does Wix really cost over time?
The plans most businesses need run about $17 to $36 a month, and the apps for booking, forms and email add more. Over three years that is often $1,000 to $2,000, and you still do not own the site. A custom build starts at $997 for one page or $1,997 for a full site. After that, hosting on my plans starts at $59 a month, or you can host it anywhere you like. See /pricing.
Can I move my Wix site to a custom site later?
You can move the words and photos. You cannot move the site itself, because Wix does not let you export the pages. I rebuild from what you have and usually make it better along the way. Start at /start and tell me what you have.
